GIS at the WRC
The Windham Regional Commission has used GIS technology since 1991. We serve 27 towns in southeastern Vermont and cooperate with towns, state agencies and non-profit organizations that work in our region. We provide GIS services to WRC staff on projects that involve transportation, land use, and natural resources planning, emergency preparedness, and community development.
GIS software include ESRI's ArcEditor 9.3 and ArcView 3.2. HP 650C and 1055CM plotters and an HP 1220C printer produce our maps.
Some Current Projects:
Brattleboro Zoning Maps
WRC is working with the Town of Brattleboro to update their zoning maps and GIS data. In the next month or two, updated data should be on the town's on-line web-mapping site.
Maps for Emergency Response and Planning
Many of WRC's maps are useful for emergency response and planning. We have created a web page listing some of these maps. That web page, and PDFs for some of the maps, can be accessed here. The most recent map is an updated map of the Village of Weston.
Road Name Maps
The WRC has produced road name maps for all the towns in the region except Somerset. We are in the process of updating not only the maps, but the GIS road centerline data as well, which we send to VTrans for inclusion in the statewide data. We are working on updated road maps for Townshend and Wilmington at this time.
Highlights of 2009 GIS work
Performed road centerline data edits, and updated road maps for: Brattleboro, Dummerston, Stratton, Wardsboro, Whitingham. In progress updates include Wilmington, Townshend, and Vernon.
Performed location edits to E911 structure point locations for: Dummerston, and Guilford. Edited data were provided to the Vermont E911 Board for updating their master data sets.
Edited and/or re-formatted data for simplified use by towns, and created new, detailed culvert maps for: Dover, Jamaica, Newfane, and Westminster (Westminster includes a 24-page culvert atlas).
Produced updated Town Plan Map series for: Dummerston, Stratton, Wardsboro, and Whitingham. In progress: Wilmington and Townshend.
Safe Routes to School mapping: mapped location of students’ homes: Guilford, and Rockingham. Pedestrian mapping for Brattleboro.
Assisted in land use planning (updates of land use section of town plan) for: Whitingham and Wilmington
Emergency planning maps, including: Guilford updated E911 address map, Guilford route alerting map, updated Townshend Village Base Map, maps for updated VY Evacuation poster; in progress include new/updated Village Base Maps of Bondville, Newfane, and Weston.
Processed town parcel data in preparation for public distribution on VCGI’s web site.
Other projects: Rockingham and Brattleboro zoning map updates; Fluvial Erosion Hazard area overlay work for Brattleboro; organizing Westminster maps; Wilmington historic review district maps; Jamaica parcel map assistance; Route 103 cooridor maps, including viewsheds of and from Meetinghouse; infill mapping of designated downtowns and village centers

What is GIS?
A GIS, or Geographic Information System, is a computerized system that can create,
edit, store, analyze, and map spatial (or geographic) data. In short, it lets one
utilize that vast amounts of data that exist in map form - roads, soils, wetlands,
parcels, etc. - in a computerized environment, where the limitations associated with
paper maps are minimized.
More about GIS
What to find out more about GIS? Visit the Vermont Center for Geographic Information's excellent GIS Links page (go to http://www.vcgi.org, then click on "VGIS Links" under Networking in the navigation bar). There you can find links to state agencies in and around Vermont, and also find out more information on GIS, GPS and other mapping topics.
